Fuaʻamotu International Airport serves as Tonga’s primary international airport and is the country’s main connection to regional and international destinations. As air travel became increasingly important to Tonga’s economy, tourism sector and connectivity with neighbouring Pacific nations, investment in airport infrastructure was essential to ensure safe and efficient operations.
McKay was engaged to complete the electrical wiring and commissioning of the airport’s new control tower, including the installation and changeover of runway control units. The control tower represented a critical component of the airport’s operational infrastructure, providing air traffic controllers with the systems required to manage aircraft movements safely and effectively. The changeover of runway control systems required careful planning and execution to ensure continuity of airport operations while new equipment was integrated into service.
In addition to the control tower works, McKay delivered the complete electrical installation associated with a 600-metre extension to the existing airport facilities. This work included the electrical systems necessary to support the expanded airfield infrastructure, contributing to improved operational capability and accommodating the airport’s future growth requirements. The project required the integration of power distribution, lighting and control systems within a live airport environment where reliability and safety were paramount.
Delivering the project in Tonga presented many of the logistical challenges common to Pacific Island infrastructure projects during the 1980s. The transportation of specialist equipment and materials, coordination of technical resources, and commissioning of critical aviation systems required careful planning and a high level of technical expertise. McKay’s ability to successfully execute these works demonstrated the company’s growing capability in delivering complex infrastructure projects throughout the Pacific region.
The Fuaʻamotu International Airport project reflected McKay’s expanding involvement in major transport and infrastructure developments beyond New Zealand. By contributing to the modernisation of Tonga’s primary international airport, McKay helped support the nation’s connectivity, economic development and aviation safety. The successful completion of the project further strengthened the company’s reputation for delivering specialised electrical infrastructure solutions in remote and demanding environments across the Pacific.
