New Zealand Window Glass Limited

New Zealand Window Glass Limited (NZWG) was established in Whangārei in 1963 as a joint venture between Pilkington Brothers and Australian Consolidated Industries, bringing large-scale glass manufacturing capability to New Zealand for the first time. The plant was a significant regional employer and an important contributor to the domestic construction sector, supplying window glass to meet the needs of a rapidly growing building market during the latter half of the twentieth century.

From its formation, NZWG required reliable and highly specialised electrical systems to support continuous, high-temperature glass production. The manufacturing process relied on large furnaces, annealing lehrs, cutting and handling equipment, and complex control systems, all of which demanded stable power supply, precise control and rigorous maintenance. Electrical reliability was critical, as unplanned outages could result in significant production losses and damage to plant and product.

McKay was engaged to provide electrical installation and ongoing maintenance services to the Whangārei facility from its early years of operation. The scope of work encompassed the installation of power distribution systems, motor control centres, furnace and process plant electrification, and site-wide lighting and services. In parallel, McKay delivered ongoing maintenance support, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of critical plant, responding to faults, and carrying out planned upgrades as production requirements evolved.

Over time, the relationship developed into a long-term partnership characterised by continuity of knowledge and a deep understanding of the site’s operational demands. McKay electricians worked closely with NZWG’s engineering and production teams, supporting plant modifications, capacity improvements and compliance with evolving electrical and safety standards. The ability to provide consistent on-site expertise was a key factor in maintaining production reliability in a demanding industrial environment.

In 1983, while NZWG marked its 20th year of operation, McKay also celebrated a 20-year working relationship with the company, reflecting the strength and longevity of the partnership. This milestone recognised two decades of collaboration supporting one of Northland’s most significant manufacturing operations.

NZWG continued operations until the early 1990s and was ultimately liquidated between 1993 and 1994. Despite its closure, the electrical installation and maintenance contract stands as an example of McKay’s long-term commitment to supporting New Zealand’s industrial sector, delivering reliable electrical solutions over decades of continuous production and contributing to the success of a major manufacturing enterprise in the region.
