Queenstown Airport

In 1972, McKay was engaged to carry out specialist electrical work at Queenstown Airport, building directly on the experience gained during the successful delivery of its first airport project at Manapouri Airport the previous year. The project formed part of ongoing improvements to aviation safety at one of the most challenging and strategically important regional airports in New Zealand, located in a demanding alpine environment and subject to complex approach conditions.

The scope of work centred on the installation, testing, and commissioning of a new red-white visual approach slope indicator (VASI) system on the existing runway. The VASI system provides pilots with clear visual guidance during the landing approach, using a combination of red and white lights to indicate whether an aircraft is on, above, or below the correct descent angle. Integrating the system into an operational runway required careful planning and precise execution to ensure both accuracy and minimal disruption to airport operations.

McKay’s work included laying underground power, control, and airfield lighting cables, along with surveying, siting, and constructing dedicated VASI pads. Following this, the VASI units were erected, aligned, tested, and commissioned to meet the required aviation standards. In parallel, McKay installed, tested, and commissioned the associated airfield lighting control panel and 400V switchgear required to support the new system.

Alterations were also made to the existing remote control panels to enable the full integration and operation of the new VASI system within the airport’s lighting and control infrastructure. This ensured seamless control and monitoring of the airfield lighting systems from established operational points.

The Queenstown Airport project further established McKay’s capability to deliver specialist airfield electrical systems under demanding conditions. Successfully integrating a new VASI system into an active airport environment reinforced the company’s growing reputation in aviation infrastructure and marked an important step in developing a portfolio of airport projects that would extend across New Zealand and, in later years, into the Pacific region.
